AP Legislative Council disqualifies YSRC MLC Janga Krishna Murthy for defecting to TDP

AMARAVATI: The Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council Koyye Moshenu Raju issued a gazette notification on May 15, disqualifying YSRC MLC and president of the party’s BC wing, Janga Krishna Murthy on grounds of defection.
Krishna Murthy resigned from the primary membership of the party and the post and joined TDP in a public meeting in Sattenapalli on April 6, 2024. Janga won as MLA twice on a Congress ticket in 1999 and 2004. Later, he switched over to the YSRC.
The Council Chairman in the Gazette notification explained the reasons why the MLC was disqualified based on a complaint submitted by Lella Appi Reddy, Government Whip.
Appi Reddy complained that Krishna Murthy was involved in anti-party activity by openly criticising the party and also by meeting opposition leader Nara Chandrababu Naidu. “He held a press conference on April 1 and resigned from the party and president post of the BC wing citing that he was not given a party ticket to contest as MLA. He later joined the TDP at a public meeting in the presence of Nara Chandrababu Naidu,” he said.
However, Janga Krishna Murthy refuted these allegations and said that he did not defect to TDP but voluntarily gave up his membership. “The mere expression of the plight of people belonging to the weaker sections does not amount to inciting the public against the YSRCP and its leaders,” he explained in his response.
The Chairman in the final order said that he had no hesitation to believe that the Janga had incurred disqualification under para 2(1)(a) of the X Schedule of the Constitution.
“By the powers vested under para 6 of the X Schedule and Rule 8 of the members of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council (Disqualification on ground of Defection) Rules, this Authority holds that Janga Krishna Murthy, Member of Legislative Council, for the reasons stated herein above, has incurred disqualification under para 2(1)(a) of the X Schedule of the Constitution of India,” the notification said.
