VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGenco) has successfully synchronised the new 800 MW unit-8 (stage-5) of the Dr Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) with the electrical grid on Sunday, 11 June 2023. With the trial operation of the new unit, the thermal installed capacity of APGenco has reached 8,789 MW.

The 800 MW boiler, installed in an area of 80 acres, has been built with supercritical technology and an energy-efficient turbine and generator. The APGenco team, Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), and BGR EPC contractors achieved this milestone.

In March 2023, an 800 MW unit-III of the Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Station (SDSTPS) in Nellore was commissioned. APGenco contributes 102 to 105 million units of power to the state grid daily, which makes up for 45 percent of the total electricity consumption. This is also the highest-ever power generation capacity after bifurcation.

The overall aim is to adopt the best practices, improve operational efficiency, specifically for APGenco, to maintain the highest plant load factor (PLF). Through the power utilities, the state government is pursuing the objective of providing round-the-clock power to all consumer categories and ensuring nine hours of daytime power for agricultural purposes.
