CHITTOOR: In a tragic incident, a 50-year-old man along with his wife were trampled to death by an elephant in 190 -Ramapuram village in Gudipala mandal in Chittoor district on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Venkatesh and his wife Selvi (48). The incident occurred when the duo were on the field in their daily routine. Venkatesh and Selvi sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.

Upon obtaining information about the incident, Chittoor West circle inspector (CI) Ravi Prakash Reddy along with forest department officials rushed to the spot and made attempts to drive the elephant into nearby forest. However, their attempts went in vain.

Thereafter, the elephant attacked Karthik, a youth, near a mango grove in CK village. He was seriously injured and shifted to CMC Hospital in Vellore for treatment. The elephant was separated from its herd and entered the agricultural fields near the village, and went on a rampage, the forest officials said.

The CI said that steps were being taken to drive back the elephant into the forest and cautioned the public not to venture alone into the agricultural fields until the elephant headed back into the forest.
