AMARAVATI: With continuous efforts and improved policing activities implemented in 2023, Andhra Pradesh has seen a sharp decline in over all crimes by 8.13 percent, said Director-General of Police (DGP) Kasireddy Rajendranath Reddy.

The DGP on Thursday released the annual crime review at police headquarters in Mangalagiri here. Speaking to media, Rajendranath Reddy said that the State had reported a total of 1,61,334 cases under various sections of IPC against 1,75, 612 cases in 2022 and 2,05,747 in 2021.

Rajendranath Reddy said that the State saw a 10 percent decline in murder cases, attempted murder and riots in 2023. In particular to murder cases, the State reported 802 cases during 2023 against 895 in 2022 and 911 in 2021. Similarly there was also a decrease in cases of attempted murder in the current year. As many as 1,294 cases were reported in 2023 against a total of 1,596 cases in 2022 and 1,527 in 2021, he said.

The DGP said that in case of riots, there was a decline in the number of cases when compared to the previous years. In 2023, as many as 17,382 cases were reported in the current year as against 20,213 cases in 2022 and 19,272 in 2021, he said. Referring to cyber crime cases, he informed that there was a sharp decline of cyber crime cases by 25.52 percent in 2023. A total of 2,144 cases were reported in the current year as against 2,879 in 2022 and 1,847 in 2021, he said and added that establishment of social media monitoring cell yielded a desired result.

Informing the details of crime against women, Rajendranath Reddy said that there was a sharp decline of rape cases by 28.57 percent in 2023. A total of 510 cases were reported in the current year as against 714 in 2022 and 677 in 2021. Similarly there was also a decline in dowry deaths and harrasment cases were decreased by 14 per cent in the current year. A total of 18, 475 cases were reported in 2023 as against 21,602 in 2022 and 18,331 in 2021, he said.

The DGP said that Andhra Pradesh also saw a 7.83 per cent decline in the road accidents. In 2023, a total of 17,417 road accidents were reported in the State as against 18,898 in 2022 and 19,809 in 2021. “The number of road accidents are decreased in the State due to identification and rectification of black spots, intensifying police vigil, enforcement and identification of roads where frequently accidents are happened, which has a cascading effect in the decline of road accident deaths,” he said.

On ganja cultivation, the DGP said that police department encouraging ganja cultivators to focus on cultivating alternate crops. The State Government handed over around 2.52 lakh acres to tribals. “We have destroyed around five lakh kgs of ganja seized in various cases in the last three years. No one will be spared if they found cultivating ganja. Stern action also will be taken on ganja peddalars, customers and smugglers,” Rajendranath Reddy said.
