AMARAVATI: The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has forecast light to moderate rains at many places in Coastal Andhra region on Monday and Tuesday due to severe cyclonic storm Michaung moving towards north-west in Bay of Bengal.

In response, the State Government had declared for all schools in Andhra Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday, and advised residents in the coastal region to stay at home. APSDMA managing director Dr BR Ambedkar on Monday said that the cyclonic storm was moving 8 km per hour. Currently, the cyclone was centered at a distance of 90 km to Chennai, 170 km to Nellore, 300 km to Bapatla and 320 km to Machilipatnam.

With this, the cyclone would move parallel to the coastal region on Monday, he added.Ambedkar said that the cyclone Michaung would cross the coastal region in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday afternoon between Nellore and Machilipatnam. Due to this effect, there would be light to moderate rains in many places in the coastal and Rayalaseema region. While some places in Andhra Pradesh would receive heavy to very heavy rains and very heavy rains. On Wednesday, heavy rains would lash out the Northern Andhra region, he said.

“The cyclonic storm is expected to bring maximum sustained wind speeds of 80-100 kmph, along the coasts with gusts reaching up to 90-110 kmph in the evening,” Ambedkar said and asked the fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next couple of days.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) Vizag Weatherman aka Sai Kiran said, “Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Vizianagaram, Kakinada, Rajahmundry, konaseema, Srikakulam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Eluru and West Godavari are expected on and off showers. While Nellore, Chennai, Tirupati, Prakasam and Bapatla experience continuous heavy rain.”
