HYDERABAD: Congress leader YS Sharmila has said that her meeting with Chandrababu Naidu should not be politicised and that she met the TDP president only to invite him for her sons's wedding.

Sharmila, who recently joined the Congress, met Naidu in his Jubilee Hills residence on Saturday. She formally invited him to her son YS Raja Reddy's wedding on February 17, 2024.

Speaking to media, Sharmila said that she did not discuss politics with Chandrababu during her meet. "We only exchanged pleasantries and Naidu spoke about his good relations with my father and former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR)," she said.

When asked about why Sharmila sent gifts to Chandrababu Naidu and Nara Lokesh during Christmas, she said that she had sent gifts during the festival to not just Naidu but also to KT Rama Rao, Harish Rao, Kavitha and many others. She reminded that Lokesh also tweeted the same.

"There is life beyond politics. It's a service to the people. There will be voices raised against each other during this service. But overcoming them, I had sent cakes to everyone with the intention of being friendly in politics," Sharmila said.

She added that she had invited many others to her son's wedding and not every move of her should be linked to politics.

"Chandrababu is the leader of the Telugu Desam Party. I am a Congress leader. I will not have any political relations. Even Rajasekhara Reddy has invited Naidu to my wedding. This is not strange at all," she said.

Sharmila added that she would work faithfully for the Congress in whatever role was assigned to her. She said that if Rahul Gandhi became the Prime Minister, good things would happen to the country.

"Communal violence will decrease which is why YSR wanted to make him the Prime Minister. I had joined the Congress too with the same intention," she said.
