KURNOOL: A four-year-old boy from a village near Kurnool, struggling with a critical condition involving nearly half a liter of pus around his heart, resulting in respiratory distress, has been successfully saved by the medical team at KIMS Hospital in Kurnool.

The young patient initially sought medical attention at a local hospital due to fever and fatigue, later being transferred to KIMS Hospital in Kurnool. The Aarogyasree scheme played a pivotal role in orchestrating a timely intervention that ultimately led to the successful treatment of the child at KIMS Hospital.

Senior pediatricians, Dr. Bharath Reddy and Dr. Naveen Reddy, along with specialists at PICU, provided valuable insights into the complexities of this rare case, highlighting the collaborative efforts with experts in intensive care, Dr. Vasu and Dr. Ravi, at KIMS hospital in Kurnool.

Admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) due to his critical condition, the medical team quickly initiated saline and adrenaline to address low blood pressure, along with antibiotics for infection and oxygen for breathing difficulties.

The situation turned critical when ultrasound scanning revealed a substantial accumulation of pus around the heart. Utilizing ultrasound guidance, a small tube was promptly inserted into the heart to drain the pus. Simultaneously, an injection was administered to dissolve the pus.

In a mere two days, the successful drainage of over half a liter of pus brought about a significant alleviation of respiratory difficulties and a noticeable reduction in fever.

Despite the initial progress, a subsequent deterioration prompted further investigation, uncovering pus around the right side of the lungs. Dr. Srikanth Babu, a renowned pediatric surgeon, promptly conducted surgery and successfully removed the accumulated pus.

Efficient coordination, timely recognition, the use of appropriate antibiotics, diligent nursing care, and the dedicated services of DNB students led to the successful recovery of the boy. After spending one week in the PICU and another week in the ward, he was completely cured and discharged.

Dr. Bharath Reddy and Dr. Naveen Reddy emphasized the critical nature of early detection in addressing sepsis, emphasizing the need for exclusive treatment of children with such diseases in pediatric intensive care units.

Pediatricians Dr. Bharat Reddy and Dr. Naveen Reddy said, "Sepsis is a dangerous disease that can stem from infections anywhere in the body. It poses risks of organ damage, low blood pressure, and breathlessness. Sepsis could affect individuals across all age groups. Early detection is crucial, involving accurate saline administration, infection assessment, and timely initiation of appropriate antibiotics. In severe cases, ventilator support and dialysis might have been necessary. Children diagnosed with such a condition should receive exclusive treatment in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)."
