HYDERABAD: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday announced that the Southwest Monsoon had entered Andhra Pradesh and spread over Sriharikota in Tirupati district. It is expected to expand across the state and the neighbouring Telangana in the next few days.

The weather agency however predicted that heat wave conditions would persist in the state till June 17, especially in Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli of North Coastal Andhra region as it would take time for Southwest Monsoon to spread.

The temperatures would touch 43-44 Degrees Celsius and there could be relief in the evening due to rains and thunderstorms in parts of Visakhapatnam. The IMD stated that the Southwest Monsoon which usually takes four days to first set in over Rayalaseema region but this year, it entered the state over the Tirupati district. Also, it takes four days for the Monsoon to reach Andhra Pradesh after entering Kerala but it took only two days this time.

It is known that the entry of Southwest Monsoon to Kerala was delayed due to El Nino and Cyclone Biporjoy in the Arabian Sea. However, the monsoon spread into parts of Karnataka, Goa, Konkan, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the last 24 hours after hitting Kerala and would enter into the remaining parts as well in the next few days.

Meanwhile, scattered showers are predicted in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and other parts of the state.
