VIJAYAWADA: Former YSRCP MLC and Mohammed Iqbal, who recently quit the party and resigned from his post, has joined the TDP on Monday.

Iqbal was a retired Inspector General (IG) who had made his political entry through the YSRCP. He worked as in Rayalaseema IG in the past. Iqbal was also the chief security officer to Chandrababu Naidu when he became the Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 1995.

He contested against the TDP candidate Nandamuri Balakrishna for the Hindupur MLA seat in the 2019 elections on behalf of the YSRCP but lost the elections. Later, YS Jagan nominated him for the MLC post. Even though his term is active till 2027, Iqbal decided to quit the YSRCP.

Iqbal was reportedly upset that the Hindupur YSRCP ticket was given to Deepika for the upcoming elections. The leader also had many differences with local YSRCP cadres which eventually led him to quit the party. In his resignation letter, Iqbal said that he was leaving the party due to personal reasons. Iqbal has now extended his support to Balakrishna, who is contesting from Hindupur once again.
