VIJAYAWADA: Six officials of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) have been suspended following the death of a man due to suspected water contamination in the Mughalrajapuram area. Additionally, show-cause notices have been issued to two other officers.

A 47-year-old man, identified as Vallur Durga Rao, a resident of Patamatvari Street, died after experiencing symptoms related to water contamination. Family members reported that Durga Rao began vomiting and had loose motions starting Monday morning. Eight others with similar symptoms have been admitted to the Vijayawada Government General Hospital.

The incident has left 24 people undergoing treatment in the hospital, prompting the establishment of a special medical camp in Mughalrajapuram. NTR District Medical and Health Officer Dr Suhasini is monitoring the situation at the medical camp. She reported that diarrhoea cases have emerged from the Moghalrajapuram area since Monday.

Several residents have lodged complaints about the contaminated water. In response, the water supply to the affected area has been halted, and drinking water is being provided through water tankers. Water and stool samples have been collected and sent for laboratory analysis. The Government General Hospital (GGH) has established a 30-bed ward to accommodate the affected individuals.

Officials have sent the water for testing and advised residents not to drink water from the pipeline.
