AMARAVATI: The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Thursday made a clean sweep in the MLC elections held under the local bodies quota in Andhra Pradesh. The ruling party won all the four seats for which the elections were held recently as part of the local bodies category. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) which jumped into the election fray despite not having the requisite strength, fell flat on its face.

In West Godavari, YSRCP candidates Kavuru Srinivasa Rao and Vanka Ravindranath registered comfortable victories against their nearest rivals. Srinivasa Rao received 481 votes while Ravindranath bagged 460 votes.

The YSRCP recorded an equally easy victory in the Kurnool local bodies MLC election. Party candidate Dr Madhusudan Rao prevailed over his nearest rival.

In Srikakulam district, YSRCP nominee Narthu Rama Rao scored a resounding victory. He secured 636 votes even as his nearest rival, an independent, received only 108 votes.

Counting of votes started on Thursday morning for nine MLC seats (three in graduates category, two under teachers quota and four in local bodies category). The results for the seats of the other two categories (graduates and teachers) are awaited. A total of 139 candidates are in the fray for the nine MLC seats for which polling was held recently. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made elaborate arrangements for the counting of votes for the MLC elections in Andhra Pradesh.
