AMARAVATHI: The YSR Congress, which had supported and helped the BJP-led NDA Government in passing the Citizenship Amendment Act in the Parliament, suddenly made a U turn.

The party, in its first ever reaction with political ramifications, on Wednesday asserted that the CAA in its current form was not acceptable to it. It demanded amendments to address the concerns of Muslim population.

This reaction from a party that had always been cordial with the BJP is not unexpected what with the latter joining hands with the TDP and the Jana Sena.

During a press conference, YSR Congress MLA Hafiz Khan reiterated the YSRCP's firm position against the current format of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) implemented by the Central Government. He emphasised the adverse impact on the Muslim community, echoing the apprehensions shared by the public.

Stressing on the urgent need for reform in the current structure of the CAA, MLA Hafiz Khan called for bringing in CAA amendments, to address the legitimate concerns of Muslim community.

Reflecting on the measures taken by the late Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy of granting of four percent reservation to Muslims, MLA Hafiz Khan said: “Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and the YSRC party have consistently stood in support and valuing all communities equally.

“The Chief Minister's vision is centered on providing security and justice to every citizen. We have sought amendments to the law so that it is acceptable to each and everyone.”

This reaction would surely irk the BJP which had fully depended on the numbers of YSRCP’s Rajya Sabha members to ensure the smooth passage of the Act.

Now that the political battle lines are clearly drawn, the YSRCP chose to play to the gallery, especially nursing its minority constituency which always stood by it.
