VISAKHAPATNAM: Chodavaram MLA Karanam Dharmasri, belonging to the YSR Congress party, resigned from his post on Saturday to support the three capitals movement in Andhra Pradesh.

Bheemunipatnam MLA and former minister Muthamsetty (Avanthi) Srinivasa Rao also offered to quit in favour of three capitals

Dharmashri had challenged Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Andhra Pradesh unit Kinjarapu Atchannaidu to resign in favour of Amaravati, or against the proposal of three capitals. However, he was later challenged by Atchannaidu who was against the Decentralisation Act, to resign and re-contest in the elections and the resignation, just a year and half before the elections, would show where the people's support lied.

The Chodavaram MLA also said that a huge rally would be organised in Visakhapatnam on October 15 in support of the three capitals.

Dharmasri handed over his resignation letter to leaders of Joint Action Committee of three capitals in the 'speaker format'.

The letter said "Respected Sir, I humbly submit that I am submitting my resignation to the Post of M.L.A. Chodavaram, Anakapalli District to support the 3 Capitals, which was opposed by T.D.P. I am consciously submitting my resignation to support the establishment of Executive Capital at Visakhapatnam. Please accept my resignation. Thanking You Sir."

The fight between the ruling YSRCP and the opposing TDP began in 2019 against the Andhra Pradesh Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Act, 2020, which allowed the State government to establish three capitals of the State at different locations.
