HYDERABAD:The Osmania University unit of ABVP burnt the effigy of the State Government protesting against the allocation of horticultural university lands to the proposed High Court building at the Arts College on Thursday.

ABVP State University convener Jeevan and state joint secretary Prithvi Teja demanded the immediate withdrawal of GO 55. They said that agriculture was the mainstay of the people in Telangana and innovative research and development took place at the campus for the benefit of the society.

“This land in the heart of the city provides life to thousands of people. This flora and fauna is the attraction of this region. To preserve and protect it, it must not be allocated for any construction,” they said.

ABVP also warned that it would fight against the State Government in all possible ways against this anti-student, anti-nature, anti-Telangana act. “Why do political parties once coming to power become so indifferent to the needs of people and start allocating precious land to mega constructions,” they fumed.

They recalled that Professor Jayashankar and Konda Laxman Bapuji always said that the development of universities is the development of the society and the country. They pointed out that the university was completely debilitated during the ten-year-long BRS rule.

ABVP leaders said that students united and saw to it that a new Government was elected hoping for things to improve. They questioned why the Government decided to give away lands belonging to a great educational institution for non-academic purposes. They added that there were more than 80 plant species, 80 medicinal plant species, 30 plant species, and 25 years of effort at the university campus. They said that there were more than two lakh trees in the university and the economic benefit from each tree could be pegged at Rs 32 lakh per tree.

“This university is called the lungs of Hyderabad. The temperature of Hyderabad is two degrees more than the temperature of Rajendranagar,” they said. The ABVP said it would intensify the movement across the state and would continue to protest until the GO was withdrawn.
