HYDERABAD: The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) Secunderabad successfully treated a patient who had developed a severe kidney infection as outcomes of Google-driven incomplete antibiotic courses.

A female architect from Hyderabad sought help from another hospital after her kidney stones were removed. A CT scan at AINU revealed a shocking discovery—several 10-13mm sized stones, only two of which were actual stones; the rest had transformed into matrix.

The patient had surgery to remove kidney stones a year and a half ago, but some remained unresolved. She relied on her father's advice and followed incomplete antibiotic courses instead of seeking professional help for recurring symptoms, leading to antibiotic resistance and bacterial protein precipitates, causing matrix formation.

During a recent visit to AINU, Secunderabad, the patient complained of an obstructed kidney and a urinary tract infection (UTI). The intervention at AINU, Secunderabad involved diverting the blocked urine, followed by surgical intervention / PCNL to remove the stones.

Following surgery, the patient revealed a history of taking antibiotics for UTI symptoms, always stopping courses midway. Dr. Raghavendra Kulkarni emphasised the importance of adhering to prescribed antibiotic courses and avoiding self-prescription. He emphasised the risk of matrix formation due to untreated infections, particularly in women.

The recommended treatment, Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), was found to be effective in this case. The patient was successfully treated by urologist Dr. Raghavendra Kulkarni at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) Secunderabad, providing an important lesson in responsible healthcare practises.

This story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of making uninformed health decisions, as well as the expertise that AINU brings to complex medical cases. The institute promotes responsible healthcare practises and emphasises the value of seeking professional advice for optimal health.
