HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, BRS MLA Gongidi Sunitha and several women corporators of the ruling party were arrested after they attempted a dharna outside Raj Bhavan on Saturday evening. Protesting against the derogatory comments of BJP Telangana chief Bandi Sanjay, a delegation of women leaders led by the mayor sought an appointment of Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan to submit a memorandum to her in this connection.

But with the Governor not giving the appointment, they descended on Raj Bhavan and made an attempt to make their way inside the premises. They were immediately taken into preventive detention by the Hyderabad police, who said that there was no permission for the Mayor’s delegation to meet the Governor. The mayor led a march up to Raj Bhavan and due to denial of Governor’s appointment, they submitted the copy of their memorandum to Dr B R Ambedkar statue at the Liberty Circle. The women agitators were also seen pasting the copies of the memorandum on the walls of Raj Bhavan even as they were prevented by the police.

Earlier, speaking to the media outside Raj Bhavan, Mayor Vijayalakshmi condemned Bandi Sanjay’s nasty remarks against BRS MLC Kavitha and felt that he should feel ashamed of himself for his behaviour towards a woman. She also informed the media that they had been trying hard to obtain the appointment of the governor but in vain.

Meanwhile, more effigies of Bandi Sanjay were burned by the members of the BRS and Bharat Jagruti across Telangana even as fresh complaints were lodged against the BJP Telangana chief at multiple police stations in the state.
