DCA seizes overpriced medications in Hanamkonda, Raids unlicensed clinic in Sangareddy

Hyderabad, January 30: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has confiscated substantial stocks of 'PUBERGEN HP nu 2000' Injections (Chorionic Gonadotropin injection IP 2000 IU) that were being sold at a higher price than fixed by the Central Government.

During a raid conducted in Hanumakonda on Monday, DCA officials discovered that the product, manufactured by M/s Sanzyme (P) Ltd and marketed by M/s. J.B Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd., was being sold at a Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of Rs. 598.16 per vial.

The Ceiling Price fixed by the Central Government for the same product is Rs. 343.64 per vial. The excessive MRP, constituting a 55.4% violation of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, resulted in each vial being charged Rs. 231.29 more than the stipulated amount. The total worth of the seized stock during the raid is Rs. 32,945.

"Further investigations will be conducted, and appropriate legal action will be taken against all offenders," said DCA Chief VB Kamalasan Reddy.

Officials involved in the operation include DCA Deputy Director (Warangal) C. Rajavardhana Chary and others.In another development, DCA officials, acting on credible information, raided the premises of a quack, Subrata Mandal, who is running a clinic at Bhanur Village, Patancheru Mandal, Sangareddy District, claiming to be a 'Rural Medical Practitioner.' They detected the unauthorized stocking of a huge quantity of medicines for sale during the raid.

The officials found significant stocks of medicines stored at the premises without any drug license. A total of 54 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics, steroids, anti-ulcer drugs, antihypertensives, and analgesics, were seized during the raid, with a total worth of Rs. 73,000.

DCA officials also identified several higher-generation ‘antibiotics’ at the clinic during the raid, emphasizing the potentially disastrous consequences on public health in rural areas, including the emergence of ‘Antimicrobial Resistance.’

Drugs Inspectors M. Chandrasekhar (Patancheru) and N. Ravikiran (Sangareddy) carried out the raid, lifting samples for analysis. Further investigations are being carried out to take action as per the law against all offenders.

The Drugs Control Administration issued a stern warning to wholesalers and dealers supplying medicines to unqualified individuals without proper licenses. "Such entities will face legal consequences under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act," Kamalasan Reddy stated in a press release.
