HYDERABAD: Hyderabad traffic police have fined Hyderabad Mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi on Saturday for a traffic violation during a massive bike rally from Khairatabad on the final day of the state's decennial celebrations.

Gadwal Vijayalaxmi, the city mayor, was caught on camera riding on the pillion without a helmet in Khairatabad area.

According to traffic police, two challans were issued on registered vehicle number TS09FR8710 for the driver and pillion rider for not wearing helmets. The bike owner was booked, and the total amount of challans was Rs 375.

Vinay Vangala, a social activist approached Hyderabad traffic police to take action against the city Mayor for violating the traffic rules being in a responsible position. He alleged that not only the Mayor was violating the law by not wearing a helmet but many other BRS party members were seen driving without helmets during the bike rally.

In response to his complaint, the city traffic police issued a challan and urged citizens to wear helmets for their own safety. The Hyderabad traffic police also reminded pillion riders that helmets were mandated not only in Hyderabad but throughout the country, as per Motor Vehicle Act.

The new rule makes it mandatory for both the rider and pillion on two wheelers to wear a helmet, failing which traffic authorities can take action.
