Giving voice to trees: Real-time-chip protection for 50 valuable trees identified

HYDERABAD: Who said trees can't talk, now they can make a loud sound if someone touches them with the help of a Real-time protection chip. Telangana Forest Development Corporation Ltd has introduced the e-protection system on a trial basis at the Botanical Gardens in Kondapur.
The system which is powered by a 3.6 volts lithium-ion battery once installed on selected trees such as sandalwood or redwood will make a big noise if someone touches or tries to cut the trees. While sending a message to the forest guard or caretaker on WhatsApp, it would also sound an alarm with the help of a local hooter.
The tree protection system can send different reports to the users and is connected to the cloud server. The system created by CTIOT Technologies was installed on 50 valuable trees under the supervision of Telangana Forest Development Corporation Ltd, Vice Chairman Dr G Chandrasekhar Reddy.
According to Chief Executive Officer of CTIOT Satyanarayana Chopppadandi, the new technology was introduced in Telangana for the first time by equipping these chips to 50 valuable trees. He said that this system would be very useful for farmers who want to grow large amounts of sandal or redwood on the farms.
“In Hyderabad city and vicinity too we have noticed that wood smugglers cut trees during night time. Sometimes they don’t even know the value of the tree and its importance in the eco-system,” Dr G Chandrasekhar Reddy said. He informed that the Telangana Forest Department would expand the e-protection system to many more valuable and rare trees in the State.
