HYDERABAD: In a tragic incident, a 28-year-old caretaker of an elephant was trampled and gored to death at Nehru Zoological Park on Saturday evening.

The caretaker was identified as Shabaz and he was working as a caretaker at the elephant enclosure for about two years.

Usually, six caretakers would take care of the elephants in the Safari in the Zoo. However, the remaining five caretakers went for a grub on the eve of the 60th anniversary celebrations of Nehru Zoological Park. At that moment, Shabaz was alone on duty in the Safari and all of a sudden, an irate elephant attacked him.

The elephant even lifted Shabaz with its trunk and was flung to the ground. He sustained severe injuries in the elephant attack and was shifted to DRDO hospital for treatment. After examining his condition, doctors declared him dead.

The Nehru Zoological Park officials ordered an inquiry into the elephant attack. A case was also registered by the police and further investigations were underway into the incident.
