Hyderabad police nab transgender, juvenile beggar duo for extortion in Trimulgherry

HYDERABAD: In response to complaints from citizens of Hyderabad regarding extortion by members of the transgender community, the Sleuths of Commissioner’s Task Force, North Zone, apprehended a transgender individual and a juvenile boy on Thursday. The duo was found extorting money from shopkeepers and pedestrians at the Lothukunta Traffic Signal, within the limits of Trimulgherry police station.

The police apprehended Swapna Kumari (37), a beggar from Aurangabad, and a 17-year-old juvenile boy from West Bengal at the Lothukunta traffic signal. They seized cash worth Rs. 3,490 and a Vivo Y-27 Cell phone from their possession.

Acting on credible information, the police apprehended Swapna Kumari, also known as Sapna Garud or Sanjay, who is transgender, and the juvenile boy who impersonated a transgender by wearing female clothing. They were forcibly extorting money from shopkeepers, pedestrians, and people at nearby traffic signals within the limits of Trimulgherry police station.

The police urged the public to report such instances immediately if they encounter individuals pretending to be transgender for the purpose of begging, forcefully demanding money, causing public nuisance, or engaging in extortion at public or business places.

They can dial 100 or reach out to the nearest police station. According to the police, timely reporting can prevent further disruptions and protect the rights of everyone in the community.

The arrest was made under the supervision of S. Rashmi Perumal, Dy. Commissioner of Police, Commissioner’s Task Force, by K. Srikanth, Inspector of Police, Admin, Commissioner’s Task Force, along with SIs B. Ashok Reddy, P. Gnanadeep, D. Srinivasulu, and the North Zone Task Force Team, Hyderabad.
