MUMBAI: Defending champions, England, continue to face challenges in the 2023 World Cup. They have now lost three out of four games. In their recent match against South Africa, England suffered a humiliating defeat by 229 runs, resulting in the loss of not only two points but also a substantial negative impact on their net run rate.

Facing South Africa, England was set a daunting target of 400 runs. On top of that, the Protea bowlers dismantled England's top order right from the beginning of their chase. Consequently, England lost eight wickets with just 100 runs on the board. While Gus Atkinson (35) and Mark Wood (43*) managed a 70-run partnership, it ultimately proved insufficient. England ended up losing nine wickets for a total of 170 runs. Recee Topley did not bat due to an injury sustained in the first innings. Gerald Coetzee (3/35) scalped three wickets. Lungi Ngidi (2/26) and Marco Jansen (2/35) took two wickets each.

On the flip side, South Africa's batters delivered an explosive performance in the initial phase of the match. Despite an early dismissal of de Kock, Reeza Hendricks (85), van der Dussen (60), and Aiden Markram (42) went on the offensive against the English bowlers. Later, Henrich Klassen's outstanding century (109), achieved in just 61 balls, was well-supported by Marco Jansen's fiery innings (75*). With this collective effort, South Africa posted a formidable total of 399/7 in their allotted 50 overs.

Following this resounding victory, South Africa is scheduled to face Bangladesh on October 24. Meanwhile, England's next match will be against Sri Lanka on October 26.

Scorecard:

South Africa: 399/7 (50 overs)

England: 170/10 (22 overs)
