HYDERABAD: A resident doctor in the Nephrology department at NIMS hospital in Hyderabad was beaten by patient attenders in the early hours of Thursday.

According to reports, over 20 individuals gheraoed Dr Rahul from the Nephrology department, who was assaulted and beaten by patient attendants. Dr. Rahul's colleagues are currently undertaking an investigation to determine what exactly triggered the incident.

According to sources, the doctor who was assaulted was a final-year nephrology resident at NIMS Hospital. He was attacked by the patient's attendants after a 62-year-old patient who was admitted at around 12 midnight died from complications related to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

"The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when there was very little security at the hospital premises," said Dr. Prasanna, the victim's colleague.

"It's shocking that our colleague was beaten and pushed by the patient attendants. What if those present attacked him with anything else that could endanger the doctor's life? We are presently determining the incident's cause," he added.

Dr G Srinivas, Advisor to the Telangana Junior physicians Association (TJUDA), told Newstap, "Despite many doctors being attacked in the past, no safety measures have been taken for the safety of the doctors. Despite the fact that the state government issued the GO, no safe environment or SPF force has yet been appointed".
