HYDERABAD: Dr Ruth Paul John, an orphan and transgender, faced umpteen troubles since her childhood to achieve her dream. A huge fee of Rs 2.5 lakh to join as Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Emergency Medicine at ESI Hospital, Sanathnagar, Hyderabad, become an unsurmountable obstacle for her to clear.

With the help of her colleagues at the Osmania General Hospital (OGH) and the Rajendranagar-based Helping Hand Foundation- Support for Educational and Economic Development (HHF- SEED), she now joined her dream course to become the first-ever transgender person to do so.

A meritorious student from Khammam, Ruth who is working as a medical officer in OG, H in the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) section that deals with HIV, and AIDS patients, shared her predicament with her colleagues at the workplace.

As the word spread Dr B Nagender, Superintendent OGH, initiated a campaign to help Dr Ruth. In a matter of 24 hours, OGH doctors and staff contributed Rs one lakh and the balance of Rs 1.5 lakh was contributed by HHF-SEED. A cheque for the total amount was given to Dr Ruth helping her to fulfill her dream.
