ANANTAPUR: A 10-day-old premature baby, who was suffering from severe infection, multi-organ failure, and cardiac arrest, was saved by KIMS Saveera in Anantapur.

According to Dr Mahesh, paediatrician at KIMS hospital, Jayamma from Kalyandurg recently delivered an underweight premature baby in a private hospital. Jayamma had a C-section in the seventh month due to high hypertension.

The baby was born weighing only 1.5 kg. Infection caused harm to the functioning of her heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. The platelet count had fallen to 9,000. Blood supply to the heart was inadequate, and the baby had also developed pulmonary edema.

The baby was shifted to KIMS Saveera when she was ten-days-old. Doctors put the baby on mechanical ventilation for six days as her blood pressure was extremely low. During that time, she also experienced a heart attack. Her heart was revived with CPR.

According to Dr Mahesh, CPR can usually recover the heart if all of the other organs function properly. However, even though the infant had a multi-organ failure and was just 10-days-old, doctors were able to revive her promptly.

She was placed on an artificial ventilator, and doctors began treating her with ionotropic medications, blood components, immunoglobulin injections, and antibiotics. They took her off the ventilator after six days and continued her treatment. After 20 days of rigorous work, the infant recovered and was discharged from the hospital.

"She must be handled with care until she is two-years-old. It is important to keep track of her growth patterns. If parents see any health problems, they should consult a doctor immediately. Since the kid was delivered preterm, they should implement an early intervention programme," said paediatrician Dr Mahesh.
