HYDERABAD: Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) KT Rama Rao (KTR) has reiterated the Telangana Government's commitment to Osmania University's growth under Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's (KCR) leadership.

KTR, along with Ministers Sabhitha Indra Reddy, Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Md Mahmood Ali, laid a foundation stone for the construction of boys hostel and classroom buildings at an estimated cost of Rs 18.75 crore on the Nizam College Campus in Hyderabad on Saturday. The buildings would be constructed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

KTR said that he was proud to be an alumnus of Nizam College. "I studied at Nizam College from 1993 to 1996. Every time I visit college, it gives me a pleasure to recall my student life. I tell my friends abroad that I am a proud alumnus of Nizam College,” he said. The minister said that when Nizam College lacked a hostel for female degree students, the Telangana Government promptly addressed this by constructing a new hostel, with the aim of offering accommodation to poor students from rural backgrounds.

Promising the State government's support for Osmania University's progress and improved facilities for students, he said in addition to the funds from the Education Department, around Rs 40.75 crore was sanctioned from HMDA for expeditiously completing various development works in Nizam College.

The minister said that the ongoing plans included the construction of 10 extra classrooms and a boys hostel, with a target of completing the project within 15 months without causing any damage to the college grounds. In addition, Rs 16 crore was also sanctioned for developing a link road from Osmania University to Adikmet, he said.

“It is a welcome initiative to set up Osmania TV with TSAT, which helps provide education to more people based on the changing conditions,” he said. KTR also took a dig at former Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar who was also an alumnus of Nizam College for not sanctioning a single rupee for the upliftment of the college during his tenure.

Sabitha Indra Reddy said that Nizam College degree students were also provided a hostel facility for the first time. “KCR has paid special attention to the education department and has allocated Rs 500 crore for universities. The number of girls in higher education has increased after the formation of Gurukulas. Several girl students are making best use of the money from Kalyana Lakshmi for pursuing their higher studies,” the minister said
