Rains to last few more days in Telangana: IMD

HYDERABAD: The Indian Metrological Department(IMD) Hyderabad has issued an orange, yellow warning for the next five days in Telangana. IMD predicted an orange alert for May 2 and a yellow alert for May 3, 4, and 6, 2023 in Telangana state.

IMD has issued an orange warning for Tuesday, predicting thunderstorms with lightning, hail, heavy rain, and gusty winds (40–50 KMPH) in Telangana's districts of Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagityal, Karimnagar, Peddapally, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Warangal, Hanamakonda, Siddipet, and Nagarkurnool on May 2, 2023.

According to IMD, thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds (30-40 KMPH) are very likely to occur at isolated locations throughout Telangana's remaining districts on May 2, 2023.

IMD Director K Nagarathana stated, the unseasonal rains during the summer are caused by a trough/wind discontinuity from South Madhya Pradesh to South Tamilnadu. She stated that the rains could last two to three days longer.

Rain that would remain a few more days in the state indicates that summer weather will return after the torrential rains and thunderstorms that have lashed across Telangana.

According to the rain report, Jangaon had the most rainfall in Telangana, with 123.5 mm, while Bhongir in Yadadri received the least, with 119.5 mm in the last few days.

Shaikpet had the most rainfall (106 mm), followed by Khajaguda (96.8 mm), Ramanthapur (82 mm), Anandbagh (81.3 mm), and Srinagar colony (80 mm) in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) areas.

Telangana farmers suffered huge crop loss

Farmers across Telangana have suffered massive crop losses as a result of unseasonal rains in the last month. Farmers suffered a twofold loss as a result of hailstorms that struck many places of the state.

A hailstorm wrecked a mango crop covering approximately 5,280 acres in the erstwhile Warangal area on April 24, 2023, leaving farmers in a state of distress. Crop loss of up to 5,000 acres was reported in six villages in the Choppadandi, Gangadara, and Huzurabad mandals of the Karimnagar district.

A preliminary report was released on the extent of the damage given by Horticulture department officials from the districts of Hanamkonda, Jangaon, and Mahabubabad. According to the report, the hailstorm damaged 3,548 acres of mango crop in the Mahabubabad district, 500 acres in the Hanamkonda district, and 1,232 acres in the Jangaon area.

BC Welfare and Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar, who inspected damaged paddy fields in Chamanapalli, Bahadurkhanpet, and Taheerkondapur in Karimnagar rural mandal last week alongside officials, promised suitable assistance to farmers who experienced a large crop loss.

The minister stated that Rs 8.5 crores were reimbursed for the first installment of crop loss compensation in the relevant districts, which would be distributed to farmers soon, adding that the present loss would be thoroughly assessed within two to three days. He assured farmers that they should not worry and that the government would support them even if nature was not in their favour.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on April 23 personally visited the districts affected by untimely rainfall and horticultural crops that were damaged. Farmers were given a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre.
