HYDERABAD: In a significant milestone, South Central Railway (SCR) has generated Rs. 411.39 crores in revenue through scrap sales as part of the 'Mission Zero Scrap' during the current financial year 2023-24. This figure surpassed the target set by the Railway Board for the financial year and marked an increase in revenue compared to the previous financial year (2022-23), which was Rs. 391 crore.

SCR spearheaded the optimal utilisation of resources by mobilising scrap sales and conducting sales through e-auctions on the Indian Railways E-Procurement System (IREPS) portal.

The e-auction process improved transparency and fostered competitive bidding among bidders across India, ensuring paperless transactions as part of the digital India concept. This also reduced the involvement of middlemen who existed during manual auctions, thereby enhancing participation and significantly decreasing grievances among purchasers.

The materials management department of SCR undertook the project, “Mission Zero Scrap and ensured that no scrap accumulated for more than a month's time or a truckload quantity. This initiative led to the cleanup of workshops, various Railway units, and premises, converting every scrap material into a financial resource for the exchequer. Additionally, this project contributed significantly to the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' of the Government of India.

Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager, SCR, hailed the materials management department for their commendable efforts in achieving this significant milestone. He said that the e-auction process had a transformative impact on enhancing transparency and streamlining business operations. Furthermore, he noted that this digital approach narrowed the gap between Railways and bidders. He urged officers and staff to persist in their endeavors, aiming for even greater accomplishments in the future.
