HYDERABAD: The new Telangana Secretariat, named after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, will be inaugurated on April 30, 2023, instead of April 14, 2023, as announced earlier.

The news of the rescheduled date for the inauguration came after a visit of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) to the new Secretariat premises on Friday morning. Accordingly, the Telangana authorities have released a revised schedule for the commissioning of three important landmarks including the Secretariat.

As part of it, the 125-foot-tall Dr B R Ambedkar statue will be unveiled on April 14, to mark the birth anniversary of the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’. And the decision to reschedule the Secretariat opening was reportedly taken to allow the contracting company and the authorities a few more weeks of time to keep the new edifice and the sprawling premises completely ready for use.

The Telangana Government has also finalised June 2 as the date for the opening of Amar Jyothi or the martyrs memorial, which is being constructed opposite the secretariat premises.

The new Secretariat edifice, a pet project of KCR, was originally scheduled to be inaugurated on February 17, 2023. But the date had to be pushed back to April 14 due to the election code of conduct coming into force for the MLC elections in the state. April 14 was thought to be an ideal date since it coincides with Dr B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary.

But after a thorough review of the progress of works taking place at a hectic pace, it was decided to have its inauguration on April 30 to allow the contracting firm time to do all the finishing touches and keep the building ready for use.

Earlier on Friday, KCR visited the new secretariat premises and went around various floors and chambers. The Chief Minister also reportedly suggested a few alterations besides inquiring about pending works, if any. He also inspected works of Ambedkar statue and Amar Jyothi or the martyrs’ memorial, located in the close vicinity of the new Secretariat.
