WARANGAL: The Warangal police have confirmed that a PG Medical student of Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal Preethi has attempted suicide due to the harassment of a senior student named Saif.

Disclosing the details of the case on Friday at a media conference, Warangal Commissioner of the police Ranganath said Saif was allegedly harassing Preethi for the last four months through a WhatsApp group by sending insulting messages.

Stating that Preeti was a very intelligent and innocent girl, the CP said that despite Preethi's request to Saif not to insult in the WhatsApp group, Saif went ahead with his harassment telling his seniors also not to support Preethi.

However, the CP said that the issue couldn’t be seen under sexual harassment or ragging and opined that it was only a matter of senior and junior issues in their job roles. He also said that there was no scope for political affiliations in the issue as the accused had no such background.

Commissioner of Police Ranganath, in his response to the health status of Preethi, said that the latter took a jab of Succinylcholine injection after researching in Google. He said she was undergoing treatment and the condition of her was critical.

Asking people and media to restrain from the false propaganda, the CP said they had registered the case under SC and ST Atrocities Act against the accused and investigating the case. He said they would talk to the first-year students to go forward in the case.

Meanwhile, the accused reportedly claimed that he had not resorted to any harassment and had been only strict in his duties. His family members came in support of him.

Details of Preethi's suicide bid

It is known that Preeti, who is studying PG Medicine in Kakatiya Medical College, attempted suicide by taking poisonous injection and currently undergoing treatment at NIMS Hospital in Hyderabad. As the condition is critical, treatment is being provided on ventilator.

Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan went to NIMS Hospital on Thursday to visit Preethi. However, Preeti's sister expressed anguish over the Governor for bringing garlands to the hospital despite her sister being alive. She said they wanted justice instead of smpathies.

Later, Raj Bhavan sources clarified that there was no truth in Preethi's sister's claim and said that there was a garland in the governor's car to offer at Anjaneyaswamy temple. They said Governor offered prayers at the temple for the cure of Preethi.
