An elderly couple in East Godavari mistakenly used poison pills dropped by a monkey to brew tea.
HYDERABAD: An elderly couple lost their lives after accidentally consuming tea made from a packet of poison pills dropped by a monkey. The incident took place in Pallikadiyam village of Rajanagaram Mandal in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.
Veluchoori Govindu (70) and his wife Appayamma (68) were at home when a monkey dropped a packet on their roof. Mistaking the packet for tea powder, Appayamma prepared tea with it and shared it with her husband. Shortly after consuming the tea, both began foaming at the mouth and collapsed.
Local residents rushed the couple to the government hospital in Rajamahendravaram, but they succumbed to the poisoning later that night. The couple's daughter, who lives nearby, filed a police complaint, and an investigation was launched.
The daughter mentioned that a similar incident had occurred earlier when a monkey had dropped a packet near their home, but it had turned out to be tea powder. The couple had likely assumed this time was the same.
