NIZAMABAD: In an act of self-defence, the Nizamabad police opened fire on a gang of thieves fleeing in a vehicle after an attempt was made to run them over. The incident, which caused commotion, took place at the Indalwai tollgate in the district late Sunday night.

According to reports, the police came to know that a gang of thieves was traveling on NH-44 after stealing copper coils from an electric transformer in Mupkal mandal. Indalwai and Darpally sub-inspectors Naresh and Vamsi Krishna Reddy, along with their teams, tried to intercept the vehicle near Indalwai toll gate.

In an attempt to evade the police and flee from the place, the miscreants attempted to knock down the policemen with their vehicle. In the process, the vehicle hit Darpally sub-inspector and his vehicle. Protecting himself from the thieves, he opened two rounds from his service revolver. However, the gang managed to escape the place. A case of murder attempt has been registered against the assailants, the police said.
