HYDERABAD: Manuguru Mahipal, a chain snatcher who targeted women during morning and evening walks, was apprehended on Monday by Madhapur Police with the assistance of Central Crime Station(CCS).

The complainant, Rella Kunnamma (53), was walking with her husband on August 28, 2023, in Vivekananda Nagar in Borabanda towards Parwath Nagar, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Madhapur Zone, Cyberabad, when the accused Mahipal followed her and took her gold mangalsutra, worth four tulas, and escaped from the scene.

A case was registered Cr. No. 968/2023, U/s. 392 IPC of Madhapur police station under Cyberabad city limits.

Earlier, on April 13, 2023, Mahipal snatched a three-tulas gold mangalsutra from the neck of a woman, Sajja Satyavathi, of Gayatri Nagar, Allapur, who had gone for a walk at Sunnam Cheruvu Park and escaped.

Madhapur police arrested Mahipal on September 4, 2023, and recovered seven tulas of gold from his possession. He was produced before the court.

Mahipal relocated to Hyderabad for work in 2014 and worked as a driver and in a furniture store. He became addicted to online gaming, lost money, and collected massive loans from friends and relatives. He watched particular YouTube videos to learn chain-snatching to clear his debts.

Cyberabad police have urged the public to be cautious when walking and advised them to avoid exposing their gold jewelry while stepping out.
