HYDERABAD: A series of surprise inspections by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday have exposed significant failings in the administration and upkeep of ten government hostels across Telangana.

The inspections, targeting hostels housing SC and BC students, revealed inflated student numbers, poor hygiene standards, inadequate drinking water, and serious sanitation and food quality deficiencies.

The hostels in districts including Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Manchrial, Rajanna Sircilla, and Nizamabad were in deplorable condition. Many lacked proper lighting and ventilation, while bathroom facilities were deemed unusable, particularly in girls' hostels.

The ACB also uncovered discrepancies in hostel records, particularly concerning food supplies. The actual weights of commodities did not match official records, suggesting large-scale misappropriation of funds. In some cases, expired food items were being used.

Teams of legal metrology inspectors, sanitary inspectors, and auditors participated in the inspections.

In an official press release, the ACB said that it would submit to the government a detailed report highlighting the officials responsible for these lapses and recommending necessary actions. The ACB will also propose additional measures to improve the hostels' current conditions.
