ASIFABAD: Tensions flared in Jainoor town of Asifabad district in Telangana after an alleged attempt to assault a tribal woman and a subsequent attack on her. Protests erupted, leading to the destruction of shops and vehicles belonging to a particular community and the vandalisation of a place of worship.

The incident began on August 31, when a tribal woman was waiting at the Jainoor bus stand to visit her brother in Kohinoor village. An auto driver, Sheikh Makhdoom, offered to drop her at her destination. However, during the journey, he allegedly began to harass her. When the woman resisted and cried for help, Makhdoom reportedly attacked her with a heavy object and fled the scene.

Passersby, mistaking the woman for a road accident victim, took her to a hospital, and later, she was transferred to RIMS Hospital in Adilabad due to her critical condition. On September 2, after regaining consciousness, the woman recounted the ordeal to her family, who then lodged a complaint with the police. The police arrested Makhdoom shortly after that.

Following the news of the incident, tribal communities in the area organised a bandh on Tuesday, demanding that the perpetrator be hanged. On Wednesday, some tribal members escalated the protests by targeting properties belonging to a particular community in Jainoor, setting vehicles on fire and vandalising the local place of worship.

In response to the violence, authorities have deployed a significant police force in the town to restore order and prevent further escalation.
