HYDERABAD: In a groundbreaking medical feat, doctors from the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Secunderabad, performed a minimally invasive keyhole surgery on a 20-year-old patient and successfully removed massive kidney stones.

A Pharmacy student from Jharkhand experienced urinary tract infection symptoms, leading to the discovery of a massive Staghorn stone measuring 9.5 cm x 6 cm x 4 cm.

Staghorn stones, unlike regular kidney stones, have distinct causes, symptoms, and treatment methods. Urinary tract infections cause phosphate salt stones, which grow slowly and silently, often without the severe pain associated with regular stones.

The patient sought consultations from different hospitals, suggesting open surgical methods with significant incisions, longer recovery periods, and higher risks of permanent kidney damage.

AINU's Urologists, including Dr. Suraj Pinni, utilized an advanced method Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy to treat the patient. A minimally invasive procedure using five 4-5 mm holes in the kidney successfully broke down a massive stone into smaller pieces, ensuring its complete removal.

Dr. Pinni highlighted the challenges of large stones in young patients and the need for long-term follow-up to monitor potential recurrence. The hospital's innovative surgery showcased its commitment to advanced medical techniques, utilizing 3-D reconstruction imaging for precise evaluation.

Dr. Raghavendra Kulakarni, Dr. Gopal Tak, and Dr. Ch Srinivasa Rao played crucial roles in the successful completion of the surgery.

AINU, Secunderabad continues to lead in progressive healthcare, combining expertise and innovation to deliver exceptional patient care. The hospital's commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements was demonstrated by the successful removal of the Staghorn stone.
