ANANTAPUR: In a rare case, a baby boy weighing 5.2kg was born for the first time in the Anantapur region of Andhra Pradesh. The average weight of an Indian infant is 3-3.5 kg, but since the baby boy weighed 5.2kgs, he was kept in the NICU for 10 days before receiving his discharge.

According to Dr. Shilpa Chowdary, Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at KIMS Saveera Hospital, the boy's 30-year-old mother, a Dharmavaram resident, had very high aminiotic fluid, a swollen stomach, and a high blood pressure. Her husband is a day labourer in the neighbourhood.

When the doctor performed an ultrasound scan, the baby's weight was high, as was the amniotic fluid measurement. The fluid level is normally 5 cm, but in this case it was 28 cm. Dr Shilpa immediately admitted her and performed a medical assessment because it was a high-risk condition.

"Her stomach was so swollen it was close to her neck. Pregnant women typically have a 36-inch belly, but due to the high amniotic fluid and weight of the pregnant baby, she has a 48-inch stomach. As a result, giving anaesthesia was also a significant problem for our team," Dr. Shilpa explained.

"She reportedly did not have any scans after the fifth month." She has two children from previous pregnancies. They were also heavier at birth (3.7 and 4.5 kg, respectively). In both deliveries, she had C-sections. Given her high-risk conditions, we have chosen the same operation again. She suffered hypertension and diabetes throughout her first pregnancy. Her vitals were also on a higher node when she came to us for delivery. Due to the complexity of this case, we had to conduct the C-section with extreme caution," Dr Shilpa added.

After the doctor ruled out all complications, the boy and mother were discharged after 10 days of observation in the NICU. Both the mother and the baby were in good health at the time of discharge. The doctor advised them to be cautious since the baby is at risk of developing obesity and diabetes in the future.
