HYDERABAD: The sound of crackers, the brightness of candles and diyas and a house full of family and friends – that's what makes Diwali special.

However, pets do not know what the festival is all about. Animals tend to panic with the sound of crackers, sometimes even fall sick because of the toxins in the smoke. Candles and diyas also pose a threat to them. Few pets also do not enjoy when the house is filled with people.

What can be done? How can you make Diwali a happy and safe one for your pets?

Keep your pets in their favourite places in the house

Do not lock away your pets from going to their favourite places in your houses. They find comfort in certain corners so make sure to keep the area clean and people-free. If it is places like the hall or balcony, bring them there from time to time and let them find their comfort.

Close windows for soundproofing

Close all the windows of the room that your pet chooses, especially when crackers are being burnt in your locality. Try to cover windows with bedsheets and pillows for extra soundproofing.

Do not leave your pet alone

Pets feel comfortable with their owners around. They get a sense of security and would make them less anxious. Make sure that at least one person from the family is around the pet.

Do not keep your pet locked up

Locking your pet away doesn't mean you would be keeping them safe. Locking them up will make them more anxious and feel like something is wrong. Involve them in your celebrations as they feed on your energy and vibes.

Use calming music and scents

Put on some calming music for your pets and use mists/sprays which your pets like. This will decrease their anxiety and help them relax even with all the hustle-bustle around them.
