HYDERABAD: In a rare feat, the doctors at NIMS performed four kidney transplants within a span of 24 hours.

Providing a new lease of life to four patients suffering from end-stage kidney failure, the department of urology and renal transplantation at NIMS performed the kidney transplants on Wednesday. The transplants included one live-related renal transplant and three cadaveric renal transplants within a span of 24 hours.

All these surgeries, costing around 10 to 15 lakhs per transplant in a corporate hospital, was performed free of cost at NIMS hospital under the Aarogyasree scheme provided by the Telangana government.

Appreciating the NIMS doctors for the same, Telangana Health Minister T Harish Rao Tweeted, "In a rare feat at NIMS Hospital, doctors performed 4 Kidney Transplants in 24 hours providing new lease of life to 4 patients suffering from end-stage kidney failure. Congratulations to the doctors at NIMS for their services to poor and needy patients. These surgeries were performed free of cost under the Aarogyasree scheme provided by the government."

The patients received kidneys from brain-dead heart donors who hailed from Mahbubnagar, Karimnagar and Hyderabad districts. According to reports, the patients recovered progressively indicating a successful kidney transplant.
