Services of the Hyderabad Metro Rail have been suspended following the attack and arson at Secunderabad Railway Station.

HYDERABAD: Services of the Hyderabad Metro Rail have been suspended following the attack and arson at Secunderabad Railway Station.

The Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL), N V S Reddy, told Newstap on Friday that the services were operational till noon. However, on the advise of the police authorities, the HMRL decided to suspended the operations. This decision was taken considering the safety and security of people and also the public property.

The police beefed up security at all Metro Rail stations and the entry and exit points of the stations had been shut down.

Violence broke out when activists of the NSUI attacked the Secunderabad Railway Station on Friday morning and resorted to stone-pelting. The mobs that laid siege to the railway station smashed the stalls on the platforms by hurling stones and missiles. They also set coaches of on fire, triggering a police firing which reportedly resulted in the death of one person. Several people were injured in the melee that ruled supreme on the platforms this morning.

Keeping in view the safety of the costly Metro Rail system, the police immediately swung into action and had the services suspended.

Mr Reddy said the services would remain suspended until the police came up with another advisory to restore the operations.

The South Central Railway (SCR) authorities suspended the operations of the MMTS services also. The multi-modal transit system is the biggest State-owned intra-city carrier in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
