HYDERABAD: Hyderabad AIMIM MP chief Asaduddin Owaisi launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP party on Monday, questioning why they do not celebrate 'Demonetisation diwas'.

He was responding to the Supreme Court's verdict on demonetisation, which declared it valid. He also challenged the BJP to observe 'Demonetisation Day' if they believe it was truly successful.

The Supreme Court upheld the Centre's 2016 demonetisation move on Monday, with one judge dissenting from the decision.

A five-judge bench of the country’s top court passed the verdict on Monday by a majority on a batch of petitions questioning the move. One out of the five judges wrote a dissenting opinion.

Despite the BJP's celebration of the Supreme Court's ruling, the Hyderabad MP mentioned that, according to a report by Azim Premji University, approximately 50,000 Indians lost their jobs and hundreds died as a result of demonetisation.

Several opposition leaders, including those from the Congress party, have questioned the verdict.

The BJP, on the other hand, hailed the Supreme Court decision upholding the Narendra Modi government's demonetisation exercise as historic, and chastised the Congress for mounting a campaign against the decision, asking if its leader Rahul Gandhi would tender an apology after the verdict.
