HYDERABAD: Sleuths of the Income-Tax (I-T) department have recovered Rs 42 crore cash from the residence of former Bengaluru corporator Ashwathamma and her husband Ambikapathy. The couple have close ties with former JD(S) and Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivasamurthy.

During a raid on Friday, I-T officials found the cash stored in more than 22 cardboard boxes beneath a bed in an apartment.

Reacting to the raid, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and Telagnana Finance Minister Harish Rao said that the amount was being transferred to Telangana via Chennai to fund Assembly elections for the Congress in poll-bound Telangana.

"The Congress is trying to win elections by distributing money. Rs 1,500 crore has already been collected from many businessmen in that State. The Congress is working on a scheme to move that money from Bengaluru to Hyderabad via Chennai" Harish alleged.

The Minister accused the Congress of giving tickets only to those who had money. "No matter how many bundles of currency are distributed, the Congress party will only keep dreaming about coming to power. K Chandrashekar Rao Government will surely score a hat-trick in Telangana," Harish said.
