HYDERABAD: Telangana achieved first place in the entire country in the percentage of recovery (67.98 percent) of lost or stolen mobile devices using the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. Karnataka (54.20 percent) and Andhra Pradesh (50.90 percent) stood in second and third places.

Director General of Police (DGP) Anjani Kumar on Tuesday congratulated nodal officer ADG CID Mahesh M. Bhagwat and his team for consistently monitoring and helping unit-level teams in achieving this feat.

The CEIR portal was developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to curb the menace of mobile theft and counterfeit mobile devices. Telangana police achieved success by effectively utilising it to recover lost and stolen mobile devices.

The CEIR portal was officially launched nationwide on May 17, 2023, and was started on a pilot basis in Telangana State from April 19, 2023. Karnataka started implementing it in September 2022.

In Telangana, Mahesh M Bhagwat was designated as the nodal officer for the CEIR portal. CEIR portal was operated in all 780 police stations in the State. With the ADGP-CID monitoring the progress of work under the CEIR portal, 5,038 lost or stolen mobile devices were recovered in 110 days, of which the last 1,000 devices were recovered in 16 days and handed over to complainants.

As per the consolidated data from the CEIR portal for the period between April 20, 2023, and August 07, 2023, 55,219 mobile devices were blocked, 11,297 traceability reports were received and 5,038 devices were unblocked and handed over to rightful owners

Within the State, a considerable contribution was made by Cyberabad Commissionerate with 763 mobile devices, Hyderabad Commissionerate with 402 mobile devices, Rachakonda Commissionerate with 398 mobile devices followed by Warangal and Nizamabad police commissionerates.

To enhance user-friendliness and serve the citizens of Telangana more efficiently, the Telangana Police in coordination with DoT successfully integrated the CEIR portal with TS Police Citizen Portal. Citizens were encouraged to utlise this service on the TS Police Citizen Portal instead of visiting ‘Mee Seva’ or police stations for reporting lost or missing mobile devices.
