HYDERABAD: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a QR code feature in new voter ID cards besides giving them a 'new look'. The voter ID cards, which are now visually more attractive and also more secure, are being given to new voters, especially in the constituencies, including Munugode in Telangana, which are destined for by-elections on November 3.

These new voter ID cards are expected to preempt fake cards production and also keep details of the voters secure.

On the new Voter ID, there is a QR code, unique to each voter, besides the person's address and constituency, all encrypted. Officials said that the voter's information would be revealed only when the QR code was scanned by a special scanner.

These new cards would be given to newly registered voters while the existing voter ID cards would still be functional and valid.

Presently, these cards are being given to new voters through speed posts, free of cost, in constituencies where by-elections are being held. This includes new voters of Munugode Assembly constituency in Telangana, where a by-election polling is scheduled for November 3.

The front of the new card features the national emblem, Ashoka Chakra and a photo of the cardholder. Voter details are printed in the form of micro-texts. A small map of India is printed on both sides of the card.
