HYDERABAD: Are global businesses going to shift to other States after the Congress came to power in Telangana? That's the buzz among netizens as Corning Inc., one of the key Apple suppliers that provides gorilla glass to iPhones, is planning to set up a manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu instead of Telangana.

In September 2023, the then IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) had announced that Corning had evinced interest to invest in Telangana.

In a tweet on September 1, KTR said: "Happy to share that Corning, one of the world’s leaders in material sciences has decided to invest in Telangana to set up a manufacturing plant to make Gorilla Glass for smartphones, for the first time in India. Investment size of ₹934 Crore will employ 800 people but more importantly a strategic investment in manufacturing for smartphones and other electronic devices."

On Monday, it was widely reported that Corning Inc was looking to set up its manufacturing facility at Pillaipakkam near Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and the factory will employ 300 people. According to business news articles, Corning had picked Tamil Nadu over Telangana due to its proximity to other Apple suppliers like Foxconn and Pegatron. An Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is likely to be signed at the Global Investor Meet (GIM) in January 2024.

Not happy over this news, netizens have started targetting the Congress Government which recently came to power in Telangana.

"Trust issues started in investors," tweeted Arpitha Prakash, an entrepreneur.

"Companies are running away from #Hyderabad. The first company #Corning Inc, which was about to start in #Telangana is moving to #Chennai This Change is Unhealthy, how you can stop them further @revanth_anumula?" she asked.

Another social media user Seetha Devi Boddu also suggested that the change in Government might have prompted Corning to pick Tamil Nadu. "States and Cities don't run on Auto-Pilot," she said. "Significant commitment, planning, and effort take place behind the scenes to attract and maintain the flow of Investments. Corning's manufacturing plant to make Gorilla Glass for smartphones has moved from Telangana to Tamil Nadu, after the recent change in Government in Telangana."
