HYDERABAD: The Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) became the country's first government hospital on Monday after unveiling a robotic surgery system at a cost of Rs 35 crore.

Health Minister Harish Rao expressed gratitude, saying that Chief Minister KCR allocated Rs 154 crores for the purchase of new medical equipment, highlighting the need of utilising funds from the Arogya Sri healthcare initiative.

Minister Harish Rao urged those in positions of responsibility to refrain from making uninformed statements. He emphasised the government's unwavering commitment to the care of the poor, citing the establishment of advanced robotic equipment in a government hospital as evidence of this dedication.

Robotic surgery allowed for smaller incisions, which lead to speedier patient recovery and shorter hospital stays, he added.

According to Minister Harish Rao, Nims hospital was always neglected for about 50 years before the formation of Telangana. The number of professors, on the other hand, increased by from 111 to 264, and the annual intake of medical students rose from 82 to 169, indicating outstanding development.

He said that Nims hospital was successfully competing with major corporate institutions in terms of advanced healthcare services. Nims grew significantly since Telangana's establishment, with bed capacity expanding from 900 to 1800. The Chief Minister also laid the foundation of 4.000-bed Nims hospital, he added.

Outpatient visits increased from 5,00,000 to 6,00,000, inpatients increased from 26,000 to 50,000, surgeries increased from 12,000 to 25,000, dialysis procedures increased from 12,000 to 72,000, and kidney transplant surgeries increased from 25 to 150 per year at the hospital, said Harish Rao.

According to Harish Rao, Nims Hospital witnessed an increase in life-changing surgeries since Telangana's formation, including 753 kidney transplants, 154 rheumatic surgeries, and 1,444 knee replacement surgeries, compared to the previous 25-year period, when only 661 kidney transplants, 46 rheumatic surgeries, and 134 knee replacement surgeries were performed.
