HYDERABAD: Doctors at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) Hospital successfully carried out a lung transplant operation, which is the first to be conducted under Aarogyasri after the Telangana Government extended the health scheme for organ transplant treatment as well.

The patient, Hymavathi, belonging to Siddipet, was suffering from a lung problem for quite sometime. As doctors informed her that lung transplantation was the only way to get cured, Hymavathi registered for the Jeevandan programme and was relying on an oxygen cylinder at home to breathe.

After a student named Pooja from Warangal was declared brain dead, her family members donated her organs. NIMS doctors transplanted the latter's lungs to Hymavathi through surgery. The surgery, which lasted for 12 hours, was carried out successfully with doctors and staff from eight departments presided over.

The doctors said that Hymavathi's health condition was reportedly stable and asserted that it would take some time for her to fully recover. It is noteworthy that NIMS has conducted 27 organ transplant operations this year.
