HYDERABAD: From five medical colleges at the time of formation of the State of Telangana in 2014 to launching nine medical colleges on a single day, Telangana leapfrogged medical education, said IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao (KTR).

KTR held a teleconference on Friday with the MLAs and Collectors of the districts where the nine medical colleges would be inaugurated on September 15. These colleges were built in Jangaon, Nirmal, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Sircilla, Asifabad, Bhupalapalli, Vikarabad and Khammam.

“Nowhere else in the country there is a medical college in every district of the State, like Telangana. Creating yet another record we will be inaugurating nine medical colleges on a single day,” KTR said. He called upon the people’s representatives and district administration to ensure that atleast 15,000 to 20,000 people must participate in rallies to be held in each one of the none district headquarters on September 15, marking the inaugural.

He said that, at least one place Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao would be inaugurating a medical college whereas Minister for Health T Harish Rao would participate in the inaugural of Kamareddy medical college.

“Establishment of a medical college in an area benefits the constituency and also its people. That is why we must ensure that local people and young people in particular should participate in huge numbers. The hospitals attached to the medical colleges will also enhance medical facilities in the region,” the IT Minister pointed out.

“We must make the people realise the way the Congress and the BJP neglected Telangana, particularly in granting medical colleges commensurate with the population of Telangana,” he said.

Health Minister T Harish Rao said that Telangana had now acquired the distinction of having medical colleges in all the districts of the State. In a statement he said :” Telangana created a record of sorts by having the maximum number of MBBS seats in the country. Now, for every one lakh population, we have 22 seats. At the time of the formation of the State we have only five medical colleges,” he said. He pointed out that the BJP led Union Government which granted 157 medical colleges to other States, didn’t even allocate one college to Telangana
