AMARAVATI: Police in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday arrested a 22-year-old person for blackmailing an innocent woman for money using her explicit video. The accused allegedly exploited social media platform Facebook to hack into her account and then trap her into a web of activities with the intention of extorting money. Ganesh, the accused, hails from Kondapalli village of Konderu mandal in Nagarkurnool district of Telangana.

Ganesh was presented before the media at a press conference addressed by Krishna district superintendent of police Joshua. According to the details given by him, Ganesh used a rather complex modus operandi to execute his plot.

A woman student from Gudur of Krishna district, who is also working part-time for an online firm, fell in the web woven by Ganesh when she tried to promote an app on Facebook as part of her job. Promising to promote the app, he befriended the woman and then tricked her into giving away the contact details of her family members as well.

Ganesh later blackmailed her into making an explicit video call. He threatened the woman that he would distort her profile and spread it around as an escort call if she did not oblige. Feeling scared, the woman gave in to his demands and made the video call as per his wishes. However, her troubles only worsened when Ganesh began pestering her for money blackmailing her with the video call recording.

With pressure mounting, the woman lodged a complaint with the SP during the Spandana programme, leading to Ganesh's arrest.

Speaking about the incident, SP Joshua asked the public to exercise utmost care while using social media platforms. He also warned online offenders of severe action if they resorted to similar offences targetting and trapping women for pecuniary gains.
