KORUTLA: Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Korutla of Jagitial district clashed violently during a crucial meeting on Thursday.

The incident left the district party leaders red-faced as it happened hours before a scheduled public meeting to be addressed by party MP and BJP Telangana Incharge Tarun Chugh here.

According to sources, the meeting began on a peaceful note but soon became violent after one of the leaders assaulted a party worker for questioning the party line and policies. With tempers running, it turned into a 'free-for-all' as the partymen came to blows and fisticuffs with one another.

The incident is being seen as a dampener for the party which is in high spirits in anticipation of several local leaders joining its fold during Tarun Chugh's meeting. One of the most prominent of them is Surabhi Naveen Kumar, a known Congress leader, with significant hold on Metpally.

Tarun Chugh has also recently made an announcement to this effect, in a cryptic manner though, saying that a key Congress leader from Metpally would be joining the BJP on August 18.
